Set of five vintage limited edition silverplate collectible spoons, made by Reed & Barton for NE, each featuring an oval disk of damascening, inspired by the art of Berta Hummel for the First Christmas collection. Excellent condition! No silver wear or loss noted.
The first silver spoon features an angel flying through the sky with holding flowers and a heart in one hand.
The second silver spoon features an angel sitting on gifts and holding a Christmas tree lit with candles and a star off to the side.
The third silver spoon features a standing angel holding a lantern and a pine bough.
The fourth silver spoon features a standing angel holding a gift with a Christmas tree and a star in the background.
The fifth silver spoon features an angel with a halo sitting on a mule holding a branch with a bird crescent moon in the background.
The sixth silver spoon (not shown) is missing the damascening disk at the tip of the spoon handle.
Damascening, the art of inlaying different metals into one another. Damascening is the art of inlaying different metals into one another, typically, gold or silver into a darkly oxidized steel background, to produce intricate patterns similar to niello. The English term comes from a perceived resemblance to the rich tapestry patterns of damask silk. This technique is often found on ornate swords.
Born in Massing in Bavaria, Germany, as Berta Hummel, one of the seven children of Adolf and Victoria Hummel, she was raised in a warm, loving and strongly devout family, living above her father's dry goods store. Already as a child Berta showed creative talent, and developed a reputation in the village as the local artist. Berta is best known by her porcelain Hummel figurines.
Each of these fine silverplate limited edition collectible Berta Hummel spoons measures 6.25" in length (teaspoon size), weighs 1.3 ounces and each is marked on the back of the spoon handle with "INSPIRED BY ART OF BERTA HUMMEL" and on the tip of the back of the handle with NIE LIMITED EDITION. We also have an "orphan" spoon of this set, without the damascening disk, which will also be included without charge.
