This delightful teacup and saucer set is an excellent example of the high level of artistic achievement associated with the Royal Doulton name.  The dainty English-style bouquets were adapted especially for this collection from a traditional Royal Doulton pattern named "Alton."

The gentle pastel shades of the blossoms are complemented by the subtle softness of the greens used in the leaves.  Both are intricately bound together by a graceful scroll pattern which weaves throughout the design.  The perfect proportions of both cup and saucer are highlighted by the Georgian-style shape selected for this set.  They are further enhanced by the beauty of the fine porcelain which is the predominant feature in every-thing that bears the Royal Doulton hallmark.

When John Doulton purchased some shares in a small pottery factory in Vauxhall Walk, Lambeth, England, little did he realize that his name would eventually be recognized as one of the most prestigious names in porcelain.

By 1820, Doulton and his partner, John Watts, were the sole owners of the Lambeth Pottery Works.  The demand for their imaginative pottery and stoneware was tremendous because of their commitment to the concept of pottery as art.

In 1877, Doulton's second son, following in his father's foot-steps, decided to expand the Doulton line to include elegant bone china dinnerware.  He purchased a well-established pottery works in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, assembled a brilliant staff of artists and raised the standards for the production of fine porcelain to an impeccable level.  In 1891, the company was appointed purveyors to the English monarchy.  The crown was added to their hallmark and they have been known ever since as Royal Doulton.

This fine bone china demitasse teacup measures 2.75" tall, 2.25" in diameter at the tea cup lip and 3" from the tip of the teacup handle to the outside tip of the teacup.  The matching saucer has a raised rim and measures 5" in diameter.  Both are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and are marked on the bases with DESIGNED & PRODUCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE DANBURY MINT, ROYAL DOULTON, BONE CHINA, MADE IN ENGLAND.
