Discontinued VILLEROY & BOCH porcelain demitasse teacup / tea cup and saucer set in the Rosette pattern (c. 1984).  Excellent condition and will include the combined original Certificate of Authenticity from Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach, West-Germany and the Danbury Mint.  This fine porcelain cup and saucer set is number 15 in the set of the Danbury Mint's Cups & Saucers of the World's Great Porcelain Houses.  The 1st cup & saucer set was released and shipped out on October 31 , 1983, and the 25th (last) cup and saucer set was released and shipped out on December 31, 1985!

The delicate creamy richness of the porcelain is set off by the high relief, cross-hatch pattern that is found on both the teacup and saucer.  This particular style was inspired by an 18th century Baroque design and was adapted especially for this collection.  The firing process is especially painstaking because of the varying thickness of the cross-hatch pattern.

The pattern itself is called "Rosette" which means little rose in French.  The rose is by itself a symbol of beauty and it has been faithfully captured by the artists at Villeroy & Boch.  The delicate beauty of its blossoms are portrayed in gentle pink hues accented by the softness of the shades of green selected for the leaves.  The rose is truly given a new dimension of beauty in this demitasse cup and saucer set.

In the year 1784, Nicholas Villeroy established a small porcelain factory in Wallerfangen, Germany.  Twenty-three years earlier, the Boch brothers had done the same at nearby Septfontaines, near the Luxemburg border.  Both made figurines and ornaments of soft-paste porcelain and blue and white earthenware.

In 1841, the two families decided to pool their resources and thus created the firm of Villeroy & Boch.  Each family brought into the firm their own traditions of excellence.  The output of these combined factories included almost every article of earthenware and fine porcelain conceivable.  By 1899 the firm employed over 6,000 artists and artisans and their wares represented the finest quality porcelain.

The fine porcelain demitasse teacup measures 2.25" tall, 2-7/8" in diameter at the tea cup lip and 3.5" from the tip of the teacup handle to the outside tip of the teacup.  The matching saucer measures nearly 5" in diameter.  Both are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and are marked on the bases with DESIGNED & PRODUCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE DANBURY MINT, VILLEROY & BOCH, MADE IN GERMANY.
