Vintage silver plated collectible souvenir spoon with the DOMINE DIRIGE NOS motto of the City of London surrounded by two griffins or gryphons and a decorative spoon bowl. Excellent condition. No silver loss or damage to note.
"Domine Dirige Nos" - Lord, direct us - the motto of the City of London or the crie de coer of the hapless tourist, lost in our one maze of one way streets. However, some people took it seriously because (little bit of trivia for non-Londoners, most Londoners probably know this) the City of London is only about 1 square mile in size, and each entrance to the city is signed on the roadside by a gryphon.
The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin was also thought of as king of the creatures. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.
This vintage silver plated collectible souvenir spoon from London measures nearly 5.5" in length, weighs .7 ounces and is marked on the back of the spoon handle SILVER PLATED.
