Outstanding coin silver spoon with a high polish silver finish hallmarked with a G over a D and 90 - indicating coin silver. This 6" long spoon is in near mint condition with only slight abrasions to the coin silver on the heel from storage.
Older American pieces, at 90% silver (called coin silver), may have nothing more than the maker's mark stamped on them. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to ascertain the silversmith. Coin silver is 90% silver and 10% copper. Coin Silver is lower grade than sterling. The Coin Silver standard was established in the US in the 1820's. This grade of silver was used in the silver coinage of the US as well as other countries that used silver currency minted in the US.
Nary a polishing scratch. Just a gorgeous silver patina in its simplicity of design and weight - very balanced. The silver spoon handle is long and tapered with no ornamentation and never monogrammed.. The hallmark on the back of the handle is a D over a G within a square and 90 in a separate square indicating that this is coin silver. This coin silver spoon measures 6" in length with a more rounded bowl than a traditional teaspoon and weighs 1.1 ounces.
