Delightful Victorian quadruple silverplate creamer, syrup pitcher by Homan Manufacturing, with bright polished silver and applied Art Nouveau flower and scrolls at the base.
It is most likely that this antique silver pitcher was re-silvered at some point in time. The silver plating along the sides is thick and in very good condition. Very minor polishing and use marks noted. A thin scratch through the silver is noted along the outside front edge of the spout and another slim scratch on the body of the pitcher just below the spout.
The appealing handle has a deep plume ornamentation and retains a large quantity of the silver from plating. A small amount of silverplate wear is noted just behind the spur. The lid of this creamer syrup pitcher has a modified beaded design along the top edge.
Early silver or silverplate syrup cup or pitchers followed the general styles of English milk pots from which they may have been derived. However, most early ones can easily be distinguished from milk pots by a small drip plate - usually attached. The invention of a patent cut-off inside the pitcher removed the need for the drip plate.
Silver and silverplate syrup pitchers were sometimes made as an accessory or an addition to complete a silver tea service. Smaller pitchers, made for specialized purposes, such as the serving of milk and cream, usually matched tea services.
Designed in a great number of styles until after the turn of the century, syrup pitchers declined in popularity and have virtually disappeared from current manufacturers catalogs.
The inside shows wear and discoloration, but overall, this is a fine example of Victorian silverplating. This creamer pitcher measures 5¼ inches high, 5" from the tip of the creamer handle to the tip of the creamer spout and weighs 11.4 ounces. Touchmarked on the base with Homan Mfg.
