Empire Quadruple Silverplate Cracker Crackers Jar with swing handle and lid from the Victorian era of elegance. Also called a biscuit barrel.
Ruffled edge along the top, ornate silver plate swing handle, and engraved "CRACKERS" along the front.
There is considerable wear to the silverplate as show in the above photos, although the inside is quite nice. Also noted is a slightly dented base and two small indented bumps along a side.
Rarely are we this perplexed, but the lid of this cracker jar seems to have an unusual satin finish and silver color - perhaps the original owners spray painted it in a silver color in order to disguise the silverplate wear.
The touch mark on the base of this quadruple silverplate cracker jar reads EMPIRE and the pattern number 60. You can read more about the history of Empire Silver at our Silver Manufacturers pages.
This Empire quadruple silverplate Victorian era cracker jar measures 5 1/2" in diameter, 4 3/4" high to the top of the ruffle, 6 3/4" to the top of the decorative knob on the lid and 8 1/2" high to the top of the handle. The silverplated cracker jar weighs 1 pound, 8 ounces.
