The term toile (pronounced "twall") in fabric means canvas or cloth and originated in Jouy-en-Josas, a little town near Versailles, southwest of Paris.
Toile is a classic decorating pattern that has been around for over two hundred years and is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. In 1779, the introduction of copper printing plates made possible the characteristic precise, detailed drawings. Most toile consists of only two colors (usually white or cream and another color), which helps keep the design timeless. It usually pictures pastoral scenes from daily life that are meant to tell a story.
Transferware is the term assigned to ceramics decorated with motifs applied by means of engravings transferred from a copper engraving to a special tissue, then onto a pottery base.
The tea cup measures 2-3/4" high, 3-1/2" in diameter and 4-1/2" from the tip of the handle to the edge of the bowl. It weighs 6 ounces. The handle has been repaired and is barely noticeable. No other chips, cracks or crazing noted. Marked on the bottom EIT LTD and ENGLAND.
