A most unusual and uncommon antique Victorian silverplate Figural Walnut Nut Bowl with gold plated / washed interior by F. B. Rogers. This silverplate covered figural nut bowl would have been used during the Victorian era to serve and store nuts in a most fashionable and elegant way. (c. late 1800's)
Every Victorian meal, breakfast through supper, used a variety of serving pieces for a richer, more interesting presentation. The sky was the limit for nut bowl designs (nuts were considered a healthy food for breakfast, lunch as well as dinner by Victorian physicians). Today, this uncommon figural nut bowl could be used as originally intended as a nut serving bowl or could be used as an unusual candy bowl or dish. Silverplate figural serving items and silver decorative items were very common during the Victorian period.
Exceptionally realistic design, as was so common during the Victorian period, with deeply embossed walnut shell design on both the top and the bottom pieces. The insides are smooth (without embossing) and plated in gold. There are no dents or dings, or deep scratches, but silverplate wear is noted mostly on the top half of the walnut. The bottom shows much less silverplate wear. The gold plated interior also has wear noted, again, the bottom half of the walnut more than the top half of the walnut. That said, nearly 99% of the original silver plating is in tact! High polished silver finish.
This antique Victorian silver plated figural covered nut bowl with gold plating measures 5.5"L x 4.25"W x 4.25" tall and weighs 1 pound 12.6 ounces. Touchmarked on the bottom of the figural walnut with F.B. ROGERS, SILVERPLATE. The F.B. Rogers Silver Company was originally founded in 1883 in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts and was moved to Taunton in 1886.
