Vintage finely crafted pewter candlestick (candle stick) in the Federal style, with clean lines and a satin finish, 5.25" tall and exceptionally clean. Excellent condition with no dings, dents or other damage to note except for a small area of light surface scratches on the lip, as shown in the photo. This 3-piece assembled pewter candlestick (unscrews) has a bright spun silver satin finish.
Seventeenth and eighteenth-century shop records and advertisements indicate that pewterers routinely made and sold candlesticks, which are also mentioned in household inventories of the period. Despite this, no pewter household candlestick from before the 19th century has yet been positively assigned an American origin.
In the beginning of the 19th century, candles continued to be America's chief source of artificial illumination. Unlike sterling, silverplated or brass lighting devices, pewter examples were almost never elaborately decorated. Most were quite severe, relying on shape and color for decorative effect.
This vintage pewter federal style candlestick measures 5.25" tall, nearly 2.5" in diameter at the top edge (holds a >3/4" diameter candle), nearly 3" diameter at the base and weighs a hefty 11.7 ounces. Maker's mark may be present, but we were loathe to damage the black velvet protector or damage the pewter of the base to find it.
