Vintage and unique OLD GERZ German stoneware beer stein with hand-painted GOLD GILD accents under glaze featuring in relief on a cobalt blue background a Tyrolean hunter and his family on the front, a cherub playing a harp on one side and a cherub with a spear and wearing a hat on the other. (c. 1949-1990) Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or other damage to note.
The attached flat lid is slightly loose (wobbles) and has some very minor oxidation on the outside. The inside of the pewter-look lid says "REIN ZINN" (purely tin) and BLEIFREI (Lead Free).
The body of this fine German stoneware beer stein is blue gray color with cobalt blue backgrounds. Full color high relief designs with gold (most likely 24K gold) gilding under glaze. The center panel depicts a Tyrolean hunter with a rifle slung over his shoulder with his family, a woman (his wife) holding out to him a baby and a young girl reaching up and into his knapsack.
One side panel features a cherub playing a harp surrounded by gold gilding on the scrolls with flowers. The other side of the beer stein features a cherub wearing a red hat and holding a spear in its left hand. This cherub is also surrounded by scrolls with gold gilding and flowers.
This vintage OLD GERZ German stoneware lidded beer stein measures 6-3/4" tall to the lip of the stein, 7" to the top of the flat pewter-look lid, 3-7/8" diameter at the base, 5-1/4" from the outside edge of the handle to the outside edge of the stein and weighs 2 pounds 0.5 ounces. Marked on the base in blue ink under glaze with OLD GERZ, AUS UNSEREM FIRMEN MARCH, the GERZ logo and W. Germany. AUS UNSEREM FIRMEN MARCH translates from German to English to "from our companies march". This mark was used from 1949 - 1990.
