Vintage Alfred Meakin "Fair Winds" tea cup teacup and saucer set from Staffordshire, England featuring chestnut brown design of sailing ships on creamy white stoneware base.  This pattern is now discontinued.  Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or other damage to note.

The design of this teacup and saucer set is based on original copper engravings depicting historical scenes.  This vintage English stoneware cup and saucer set depicts on one side a “Sailor’s Farewell” - a sailor and his gal in a farewell embrace and several tall sailing ships in the water in the background.  The the other side shows a depiction of the “New York State Seal”.  Around the saucer rim are historical vignettes with pictures of the New York Harbor in 1830 and an Eagle and the E Pluribus Unum Seal.

Alfred Meakin founded his pottery in 1874 and operated from the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries in Tunstall.  The company produced tableware for the domestic and export market in the 1940's and 1950's.

In 1976, the pottery merged with Myott, Son and Company and were later purchased by the Churchill Group in 1991.  Alfred Meakin died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James who died only four years later.  Alfred John's uncle Robert Johnson bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family's hands until 1976 when it became Myott-Meakin before becoming part of the Churchill Group.

In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased and their long-established works, Eagle Pottery, was then used for the production of Johnson Bros pottery.  Eagle Pottery closed in 2004 when production was transferred abroad in 2004; the works were demolished in 2005.

This vintage Alfred Meakin teacup measures 2-3/4" tall and 3-1/2" in diameter with England imprinted on the bottom.  The matching saucer measures 5-1/2" in diameter and is stamped  on the bottom, Fair Winds Made by Alfred Meakin Staffordshire England.
