The Haviland tradition of excellence is exemplified in the design of this cup and saucer set.  The pattern, "Shalimar", won a medal in the 1900 Paris World's Fair.  The captivating floral display on the cup is complimented by the dainty clusters of blossoms on the saucer.  The classical fluting of the cup and saucer is accentuated by the 24K gold banding, giving both a timelessness that only fine porcelain can convey.

The Haviland name has long been synonymous with the manufacture of fine porcelain.  However, the name also represents "Yankee ingenuity" at its best.

In 1839, David Haviland was a successful American importer of fine chinaware.  He knew of the growing demand in the United States for fine porcelain, he also knew how to judge the quality of these wares.  When European suppliers couldn't deliver the caliber of porcelain he wanted - Haviland visited Europe himself.

He immediately recognized Limoges, France as a leading center of the porcelain industry.  It offered both the raw materials and highly skilled artisans that were needed to produce the quality that Haviland demanded.  He decided to establish his own factory in Limoges and was soon producing a superb grade of porcelain.

Haviland adapted and changed traditional methods for making fine porcelain.  The French artisans he employed were at first skeptical and then almost mutinous, but the quality and popularity of the porcelain spoke for itself.  These new methods proved to be both an artistic and financial success.

His son, Theodore, followed in his footsteps.  He built a new factory which was one of the largest and best equipped manufacturing facilities in the Limoges region.  He refined his father's ideas and continued to employ leading artists of the day.  Haviland's award-winning designs became world famous.

This fine bone china demitasse teacup measures 2.25" tall, 2.25" in diameter at the tea cup lip and 3" from the tip of the teacup handle to the outside tip of the teacup.  The matching saucer measures 5" in diameter.  Both are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and are marked on the bases with DESIGNED & PRODUCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE DANBURY MINT, HAVILAND, LIMOGES.  The original Danbury Mint styrofoam shipping box and original cardboard outer box will be included.
