Rotund miniature stoneware German beer stein in the 1/8 Liter / Litre size with a ornate pewter conical shaped lid and a jolly fellow enjoying his barrel or keg of beer. Three panels in high relief, very colorful with no fading, with the wise words in German - "Drink which is clear, That which is good". Made in Western Germany.
This plump little vintage German beer stein is in nearly excellent condition, with no crazing or damage to the pewter lid. There is, however, one tiny chip from the lip of the stein - see photos - but with the lid closed, it's not noticeable. The pewter thumblift is attached with a closed 3 pin hinge.
These miniature German beer steins are called "kiddie steins" in Germany - even though many women used that size also. When used by children, they were mostly filled with Brause (a type of lemonade) or apple juice (made frothy to look like beer). Years ago, visiting the Octoberfest or a simple Biergarten was still a family event, unlike today.
The 1/8 Liter German beer stein measures a mere 4.25" tall to the lip of the stein, 6" tall to the top of the pewter lid finial, 2.25" in diameter at the base, 3.25" in diameter at the center and 2" in diameter at the stein lip. Weighs 12.8 ounces and is marked within the pewter lid with DBGM and the letters "R" over "M" inside of an "S". The bottom of this little German stein is marked with a "W" and an "E", the number "6" and stamped Made in Western Germany. We believe this may be a Reinhold Merkelback German beer stein.
