Unusual Bavarian stoneware German style beer stein, footed, in a matte black relief with soft green high-lights, and a deep red shield with an ornate pewter lid and a gold (plated?) applique of the Bavarian lion. Marked inside the conical cast pewter lid are the letters "DBGM" and the letters "V&B" over "M" inside of an "S". These marks indicate that this beer stein is of a post 1949 manufacture and most likely was made by VILLEROY & BOCH.
This unique cylindrical shaped drinking vessel's colors are matte (flat) black with soft green high-lights, a deep rich black gaze at the lip, and deep red shield. Within the shield is the Bavarian lion, probably gold gilded or plated - extremely detailed. The inside of this beer stein is a soft gray color and extremely clean.
This vintage Bavarian beer stein is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing to note. The pewter lid is attached with a closed 3 prong hinge. This thin beer stein measures 6.25" to the lip, 8" to the top of the pewter lid finial and weighs 1 pound 2 ounces.
Impressed on the bottom of this vintage stoneware beer stein are the numbers "206c" and "1/4" and marked on the inside of the pewter lid with DBGM and the letters "V&B" over "M" inside of an "S". We believe this to be a VILLEROY & BOCH German stein.
