Victorian antique quadruple silverplate TILTING TEAPOT, (aka tea kettle, hot water kettle or samovar) by the Middletown Plate Co., featuring outstanding repousse and hand-tooled engraving on the teapot and beautiful repousse work on the stand. This is an elegant Victorian silver plate samovar tilting teapot!
Tilting teapot's such as the lavish one illustrated here graced many a late Victorian dining room, lending an aura of splendor to any meal. The sets were produced by silver and silverplate companies around the country and abroad. They were quite popular in the homes of well-to-do persons in the last quarter of the 19th century [1880's] and their use continued into the early years of the present one.
These tilting teapots or tea kettles are rarely encountered today in antiques shops. Often those of plated silver are worn thin but these can be re-plated in silver and restored to their pristine fascination. Some of these were gold-lined, and they had removable drainers; interesting sets were available in the 1890's at varying prices, depending on size and how elaborately they were made.
Outstanding craftsmanship on the repousse work, featuring flowers, leaves and scrolls all around the tea kettle neck, along the handle, and along the ornately decorated base stand. A silver tilting tea pot, allows you to pour directly into the cup with a simple tilt.
This quadruple silverplate tilting teapot or tea kettle is in very good condition with very little silverplate wear, no dents, dimples or other damage to note other than the three tiny dents on the top of the teapot handle. Lovely antique silver patina. The matching stand, however, is bent (pushed down), though it stands flats and securely holds the silver tea kettle. (see photo)
The antique quadruple silverplate teapot or tea kettle measures 10" tall (off the stand), 12.5" (on the stand), 8" x 6" and weighs 2 pounds, 6 ounces. The matching quadruple silverplate tea kettle stand measures 7.5" x 6.5" and stands 6" tall. A burner would have been placed in the center opening of the base to heat the water and/or keep the tea warm. Weighs 3 pounds, 10 ounces unpacked.
The silver plate teapot is touchmarked on the base with "MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO.", the Middletown logo of the scales, "QUADRUPLE PLATE", the pattern number "1730" and Hard White Metal - the base metal used. The matching stand is marked "1730" only. You can read more about the history of the Middletown Plate Co. from our Silver Manufacturers pages.
