This Antique Victorian SIMPSON HALL MILLER Quadruple Silverplate Pickle Caster (Castor) with the original antique pattern glass insert is a three piece silverplate caster consisting of a silverplate footed caster, a clear pressed pattern glass pickle jar insert and the silverplate lid.
The silverplate pickle jar caster (castor) base shows absolutely no silverplate wear or damage, as would be expected on a piece of this age. The inside of the base, where the glass insert fits, is also in near-pristine condition. Florals leaves and berries surround the base with decorative beading along the top and bottom edge. Four ornate feet hold up the base.
The top of this silverplate pickle caster frame is ornate with a decorative floral, leaf and scroll design, together with additional ornamentation along the inside edge. The original hanger for pickle tongs even has a tiny scroll underneath. (The original pickle fork are missing, but finding a lovely sterling silver pickle fork, either ornate or plain, would be a wonderful experience!
The antique pressed pattern glass pickle jar insert is heavy (14.6 ounces) and has a nice starburst and clear bands surrounding the sides. The base of this clear pickle caster castor jar features the well-known and desirable starburst design. No chips, cracks, nicks or other damage to this glass pickle insert.
The silverplate pickle caster lid is very ornate with a detailed floral and leaf finial on top. A small thin row of reeding decorates the outside edge. The silverplate lid is also in perfect condition, with a high-polished silver finish - no dings, dents or scratches. The inside of the pickle caster lid still is also nearly pristine.
Pickle casters are in great demand among those interested in late 19th century silver. Most examples are electroplated and have glass containers. Pickle casters were specifically designed to contain and dispense pickles, pickle casters were derived from the caster sets used on American tables since the 18th century. By the 19800's, when the form reached the zenith of its popularity, examples were produced incorporating a wealth of fanciful decoration.
