Early American silver water pitchers are quite rare. They do not appear as a form until 1800 - 1810. Since then, water pitchers have evolved. Polished silver water pitchers are perfect to use as holiday vases and add a touch of sparkle.
The popular and wide-spread use of silver water pitchers on the tables and buffets of wealthy families may have been of greater significance than mere decoration and magnificence due to the advantages inherent in silver - and absent in other materials. Silver is non-toxic and imparts no taste. Unlike pitchers constructed from organic materials, silver does not permit an environment conducive to the growth of organisms which might contaminate the contents of a pitcher.
Silver possesses the extraordinary ability, today known as the “oligodynamic effect” to destroy bacteria. This remarkable property, not fully understood until the twentieth century, may well have helped to protect wealthy, urban populations from diseases at times when the purity of the water was not always assured.
The inside of this silver plate pitcher is finished in a brushed finish, and is exceptionally clean. Looks as if it were never used. The silverplate pitcher spout features leaf ornamentation and the ornate applied double-C handle with spur adds a touch of elegance to this vintage Rogers silver pitcher.
This fine silverplate water pitcher measures 7.5" tall, 8" tall at the handle, 5" in diameter at the base and weighs 1 pound, 8.8 ounces. Touchmarked on the bottom with "eagle" WM ROGERS "star". You can read more about the history of Wm Rogers Silver from our Silver Manufacturers pages.
