This Victorian silver napkin ring has a very rich and dark patina on the outside. The inside silverplate is highly polished and reflective.
Near mint condition with only one tiny mark to the oxidation on the back of the napkin ring as seen in the photos. The hand-tooled marks are very visible, bright cut. This Victorian silver napkin ring is so much more spectacular in person!
The napkin ring was at one time a standard accessory at the well-appointed dining table, used for both special occasions and everyday meals. A napkin ring sometimes had the name or initials of a household member engraved on it, so that the napkin in it could be reserved for that particular diner.
Many napkin rings were simple cylinders, but the form was elaborated on significantly, incorporating sculptural figures and intricate decorations. Late 19th and early 20th century napkin holders still exist.
Silver-plated examples were moderately priced and an interesting and varied collection can be assembled with relative ease. Collectors should seek out those which have spirited ornamentation or fanciful features, because these are of greater interest and will appreciate in value much more quickly than a relatively plain napkin ring.
Small items like napkin rings were rarely hallmarked by the maker. This silver plate Victorian napkin ring measures 1.75" diameter and 1.5" high, and weighs 1.4 ounces.
