Beautiful vintage silverplate souvenir collectible spoon shovel from Maffra Gippsland, Victoria, Australia with enamel depiction of a bridge over the flowing waters of the Macalister River.
This historic town is set in the heart of Gippsland and the center of the rich Macalister dairying, agriculture, pastoral and irrigation area. Maffra is the center of a whole world of wonderful attractions, not only a friendly town with its delightful tree-lined main street which makes it a pleasant stopping off point for visitors, but offering a diverse range of nearby places to visit like wineries, craft shops, historic homesteads and buildings, right through to horse riding and four-wheel drive adventures into the high country.
Around 1840 explorer Angus McMillan first came through Gippsland from New South Wales and following this, soon the beginnings of Maffra were evident.
There is plenty of proof of Maffra's earlier heritage with the old courthouse, built in 1888 and plenty of old shops still in evidence. The courthouse is now the home to the Maffra Visitor Information Center and the renowned Pino Deriu Gemstone and Mineral Collection. Maffra's Sugar Beet Museum is another historic building which is too good to miss.
The Sugar Beet Museum is in River St. which runs parallel to the main street, Johnson St. on the banks of the Macalister River. Right alongside you will discover Macalister Park where you'll find excellent picnic facilities and plenty of room for the children to run, play and let off steam before getting back into the car again or take a stroll along the river bank and enjoy the peace and quiet.
