Gorgeous antique BARBOUR SILVER CO. quadruple silverplate / bonbon sweetmeats basket with gold plating, floral, leaf and bow engraving on the front and a ruffled edge, with a decorative leaf-style handle.
Bonbon dishes were a form which developed in the 1890's in American silverplate. Even in less opulent households, where the sweetmeat course might be served in the dining room, the silver sweetmeat basket was much in demand, for the company moved to the drawing-room after dinner and was served with wine and baskets of nuts and raisins and other confectionary delights.
This lovely antique Barbour Silver bon-bon dish or sweetmeat basket is in extremely good condition, with little silverplate wear noted along the outside, the ruffled edge and the handle. There are no dents or other damage to note. The inside of this sweetmeat basket has been gold plated, which is still in very good condition - just a few light surface scratches from polishing or use. Just lovely!
The bonbon basket measures 5.25" in diameter, 1.25" high at the rims and 4.5" high at the top of the swing handle. Touchmarked on the base with BARBOUR SILVER CO., SILVER QUADRUPLE and the pattern number 2067. You can read more about the history of Barbour Silver at our Silver Manufacturers pages.
