Ornate floral and leaf engraved quadruple silverplate tea set (teapot, sugar bowl and creamer) by Rockford Silver beautifully detailed floral and leaf engraving on both sides and heavy detailed work along the rim of this teapot. (c. 1894) Monogrammed "R".
There are two engraved cartouches - one on each side of the teapot, creamer and sugar bowl - one with the engraved letter "R", the other with a date - Sept. 29 - '94 (September 29, 1894). Graceful applied handles with acanthus leaf design and a cartouche on the top of the handle which could also be engraved.
The graceful teapot spout is plain except for the lower end of the spout which has an acanthus leaf motif. No dents, dings or damage to note other than a repair to the base as shown in the photograph. There is a moderate amount of silverplate wear along the sides and along the neck of the teapot, though very little of the base shows through. Mostly, it's just thinning of the silver from polishing over the years. The handle, lid and spout show none of this thinning. Should you wish to have this teapot re-silvered, it be an absolutely stunning holloware piece! As is, it is an elegant teapot with many years of pleasure remaining.
The silver plate creamer has a moderate amount of silverplate wear and thinning, though there are many parts where the silver is still very thick. The creamer has two tiny "burst bubbles" in the silverplate near the base, but no dings, dents or other damage to note. Lovely applied handle and smooth unadorned spout.
The matching two-handled open sugar bowl has only a few areas of thinning silverplate, no dings, dents or other problems to note.
The Rockford quadruple silverplate teapot measures 7.5" tall, 9.5" from the tip of the teapot spout to the tip of the handle, is approximately 6" in diameter, 4" high at the rim (higher at the handle) and weighs 1 pound, 15.6 ounces.
The matching Rockford quadruple silverplate creamer measures 6" from tip of handle to tip of creamer spout, is approximately 4.5" in diameter and weighs 11.6 ounces.
The matching Rockford quadruple silverplate sugar bowl measures 7" handle-to-handle, is approximately 4.5" in diameter, 4" high at the rims (higher at the handles) and weighs 13.2 ounces.
Each tea set piece is touchmarked on the base with ROCKFORD SILVER PLATE QUADRUPLE, the pattern number 199 and the piece number 7. (There may have been as many as 4 other matching pieces to this antique silver tea set.) You can read more about the history of Rockford Silver from our Silver Manufacturers pages.
