Antique Victorian silver scent (perfume) bottle in an unusual shape, with a different design on each corner. This gorgeous antique sterling scent bottle is ornamented with a floral and leaf design that wraps around the bottom of the piece. Most likely meant to be worn as part of a chatelaine.
A silver chatelaine is an ornamental clasp. worn in daytime. at a woman's waist, and attached to a belt or girdle with a hook-plate from which are suspended several (usually five but up to nine) short chains terminating with rings of swivel catches to which are attached various small objects for daily household use.
Chatelaines were made of silver, gold, pinchbeck, cut steel and were ornamented with enameling, beads, beaded tassels, and sometimes medallions of Wedgwood's jasper. They came into use in England in the17th Century and were very popular in the18th and 19th centuries, but declined in use as fashionable jewelry, and were worn only for utilitarian purposes.
The detachable perfume stopper cap is connected with a 3" silver chain, and the scent bottle is also attached to a 28" silver chain, meant to be worn around the neck. There is some disagreement weather this chain is original or not. The stopper cap is discolored and slightly worn in one spot. Both the edge of the stopper and the neck of the bottle have an almost beaded design.
As you can see in the photos, each corner is done in a different design. One corner has an almost herringbone design, the other a quilted design and the final corner has an almost Art Nouveau floral design. There is a bearable amount of discoloration of the silver on the top shoulder of this perfume scent bottle, and a tiny amount of microscopic age spots. Overall, it is in very good condition.
This Victorian antique silver chatelaine perfume scent bottle measures 3" tall, 1.5 x 1.75" in diameter and weighs 54 grams or 19 ounces. We can locate no maker's mark, but we do believe that this is silver and not silverplate.
