Vintage (1973) WEDGWOOD (Wedgewood) JASPERWARE Sterling Silver Necklace Pendant featuring the traditional cream on green (celadon) Jasperware Wedgwood with a classical bas-relief mounted on a sterling silver (.925) chain, bail and beaded mount.
Wedgwood jewelry (jewelry) was first produced 200 years ago when the first Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) introduced his much prized Jasper "body" in 1774. In the late 18th century, smaller Jasper cameos were produced in great variety for jewellery. and made by Josiah's eminent friend, Matthew Boulton of Birmingham, England.
Wedgwood jewelry became enormously popular in the 18th century and Josiah produced cameos for brooches, chatelaines, pendants, combs, patch boxes and perfume bottles. Today, the complete production of Wedgwood jewelry takes place at the Barlaston factory, involving more than 100 different items in many varied Jasperware combinations including black on Black Basalt. The majority of pendants, earrings and cameos are mounted in Sterling Silver (925 parts of pure silver). All the classical reliefs applied today are reproductions of original 18th century models.
This fine Wedgwood Jasperware pendant necklace is in excellent condition, as is the sterling silver chain, bail and beaded mount. The Jasperware pendant is marked on the reverse with WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND, "S", and "75" (1975). The sterling silver chain is marked STERLING.
The necklace measures 7/8" in diameter, the sterling silver chain measures 17" and it comes with the original hard Wedgwood necklace box and product card.
