Beautiful antique sterling silver roast carving set by Lee's with natural staghorn (stag horn) handles and sterling silver ferrules. This Victorian sterling silver carving set consists of a sharpening steel, a wide meat carving fork (also called a joint fork) and a meat serving fork (also known as a bone holder). The two forks are monogrammed in Victorian script with the letters L. E. P.
We've conditioned the stag horn handles to bring back the original luster and beauty of the horn. This is an exceptional set. The staghorn is in very good condition, with the two meat forks having one very thin surface hairline crack due to age.
Wash horn cutlery and flatware in warm, not hot, soapy water, (do not soak), rinse, and immediately dry and store safely. Horn is porous and can stain easily, so wash as soon as possible. Do not store in direct sunlight. For regular maintenance, moisturize with mink oil every few usages, or once a year, which will prevent the natural horn from drying out and cracking.
The well-appointed Victorian or Edwardian table had a wide assortment carving utensils. The forks can be used for serving, as well as for assisting the carving, and can be used on the buffet table for other items such as baked potatoes.
The sharpening steel measures 15" long and is touchmarked on the ferrule with STERLING and LEE'S on the steel. Weighs 7.3 ounces. Some discoloration due to usage and age on the steel itself.
Bone holders are unique pieces used to hold a piece of meat, like a ham or a roast, that has a large bone center. After the meat has been pierced, the clamp is gently snapped down on top of the meat. This allows for the person holding the meat to easily cut the item using a knife and keeps the fork from driving down into the meat. This meat serving fork measures 11" in length and also has the inlayed sterling silver butt monogrammed, stamped STERLING and weighs 4.9 ounces. The fork prongs are sharp, straight and true.
The matching wide meat carving fork measures 10.75" in length and has an inlayed sterling silver butt monogrammed and stamped STERLING and weighs 5.7 ounces. The fork prongs are sharp, straight and true. Joint forks are large, two-pronged serving forks used to hold a large piece of meat, like a ham or a roast. Like the bone holder, the prongs fit around the bone so that the meat can be held in place while being cut.
