Victorian quadruple silverplate 2 piece crumber crumb set by Columbia Silver Co. in a VERY Art Nouveau style with scrolls and flowers.
This fine quadruple silver plate crumber (or crumb) set features pie-crust edges, highly polished silver, and the flatter of the two crumb pans features a Victorian / Art Nouveau scrolls and flower motif. The handled crumb pan also features a richly detailed flower and leaf design with a scroll design on the back of the handle.
During the 19th century, a growing emphasis on table manners emerged, most evident in the widespread publication of etiquette books and a sudden profusion of tablewares. One of the new utensils in genteel households was the crumber, which was used to remove crumbs and other small bits of food from the tablecloth between courses.
Both pieces of this crumber set have no dents or dings, but silverplate wear is noted, especially on the handled crumber, as shown in the photos. The other crumber has signs of wear to the pan base, and a touch along the crimped edges. The backs of both silverplated pieces also show areas of wear, but overall, 85% of the original quadruple silverplate is intact. A lovely set to use or display.
The handled crumber measures 12.75" in length, is 3.25" wide and weighs 6.7 ounces. The wider silverplate crumber measures 8.5" x 5.75" and weighs 6.3 ounces. Touchmarked on the back with COLUMBIA SILVER CO., QUADRUPLE PLATE, and the pattern number 18024. The pattern number only is noted on the back of the handled crumber pan.
