Antique sterling silver master butter knife by Wendell Manufacturing Company. (c. 1850 - 1900) Never monogrammed.
This sterling silver butter knife was well loved. Pretty scroll design with dots running down the handle within an elongated cartouche. The silver master butter knife does have some spots to note; there is a tiny cut in the lower part of the blade, two light bends in the knife blade (both shown in the photos) and there are usage marks in the silver. This sterling silver butter knife didn't spend its life stored in a drawer, but used most likely on a semi-daily basis.
Wendell Manufacturing Company was founded by Charles Wendell in 1850 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1855, Wendell was incorporated. They were well-known manufacturers of sterling silver badges. Near 1860-1897, Wendell acquired some of the flatware patterns and dies of Mauser Manufacturing Company. Wendell also made sterling silver wares for Marshall Field & Co. Wendell discontinued the production of flatware in 1900.
Measuring 6.76" long and weighing 0.6 ounces, touchmark on the back of this sterling silver flatware is a lion passant facing right, a "W", and a lion passant facing left - the mark of Wendell.
